The objective of the Energy Sector Development Project for Micronesia is to increase the available generation capacity and efficiency of electricity supply in the state power utilities, and to strengthen the planning and technical capacities of the National Government and the state power utilities in the energy sector. There are three components to the project,

  • $9.27 million will be used to improve efficiency and increase generation capacity in the state power utilities.
  • $3.4 million will be used to improve energy planning amongst the national and state entities to achieve a cohesive approach including:
  1. identifying and prioritizing infrastructure investments in the energy sector; and
  2. undertaking feasibility studies, and environmental and social impact assessments for the priority investments.
  • Finally, $1.5 million will be used to procure technical assistance and enhance project management

Documents relating to the project can be downloaded from the World Bank site: http://www.worldbank.org/projects/P148560/?lang=en&tab=documents&subTab=projectDocuments

Under the first component, the state utilities will be able to obtain new generators and other apparatus to address immediate power generation challenges while working on longer-term cost-effective measures.
