Suva, Fiji

Several PICs have draft legislative frameworks in place and are at different stages of obtaining approvals from their respective Governments. To strengthen capacities of PICs to effectively administer the minimum energy performance standards and labelling legislation when enforced, a training  programme was developed after discussions between the PIC PALS co-ordinators, the Pacific Community (SPC) and other advisors at the PALS Steering Committee Meeting in Nadi, Fiji, on 6-7 August 2015.

The training programme is in three phases. Phase 1 and 3 will be carried out in each PIC whereas Phase 2 will be conducted in Fiji being the only PIC that is implementing MEPSL so participants can observe actual working examples. Phase 1 training for key agencies responsible for implementing the legislation is intended to develop the administrative  framework, to understand the legislation and roles of each key agency and identify the best ways to work together. Phase 1 training has been completed in Vanuatu, Tonga, Kiribati, Solomon Islands with Samoa and  Tuvalu to be completed by the end of March 2016

This Phase 2 training aims to provide:

(i)  a better understanding of a working labelling and standards programme;

(ii)  practical experience on product registration, and compliance check;

(iii)  a better understanding of the technical details of each of the mandated product.
