In April of 2014, the 2nd Regional Meeting of Pacific Energy Ministers re-affirmed the region’s commitment to underpinning the vision of the UN’s SE4ALL initiative and to the achievement of its 2030 goals of:

    • Achieving universal access to modern energy services;
    •  Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and
    • Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global mix.

    Ministers acknowledged sustainable energy as the most critical driver for development and welcomed the inclusion of ‘sustainable energy for all’ in the Pacific priorities to be submitted to the Third International Conference on SIDS in Samoa, in September 2014.

    At the SIDS Conference, the USA announced its pledge to provide funding and expertise for a workshop to be implemented by SPC in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to review the policy frameworks and technical assistance needed to increase renewable energy use throughout the Pacific Islands.

    Purpose:
    The workshop seeks to

    1. review the policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks needed to attract the investment to support renewable energy project development throughout the PICs;
    2. discuss an integrated approach to energy sector planning and program implementation; and
    3. explore financing and capacity building considerations related to clean energy deployment in the PICs.
